Backpack Buddies on Sale Now

The start of a new school year is an exciting time. However, many families struggle to provide their children with the right tools for school. At Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, our main mission is feeding the hungry, but we also recognize that breaking the cycle of poverty takes more than just food. That’s why we created the Backpack Buddies program – to provide at-risk kids with all the supplies they need to be successful in the classroom.

“In many cases, students wouldn’t have access to these supplies,” according to Susan Saller, coordinator to the Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools.  “Nearly 80% of MPS students qualify for free and reduced price meals, which means their families are in poverty.”

Over 1,700 children received backpacks in 2009 thanks to the Backpack Buddies program. “Having the right school supplies definitely helps students do better by helping them arrive at school prepared to learn,” said Saller.
